Our Story

Picture
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the answer when there is no answer.  It’s a cold hearted killer that steals babies from their families without a trace leaving a gaping baby sized hole that will never heal.  It’s hard as a mother, as a parent, not knowing why your baby died, I constantly ask myself did I miss something, were there any signs on the day before that I missed, did I fail as his mum?

Our Son Alexander was a happy, healthy and very cheeky 17 month old who had just days before his death learned to walk and I have no reason why he suddenly died in his sleep.  I live with a constant fear that my other children could suddenly and without warning die, needless to say I haven’t had a full night’s sleep in 6 years.  Irrational? Very!  but you can’t tell me it won’t happen because it already has.

As a family we have untold support from our network of family and friends without whom I’m not sure we could be as open about our tragedy and as for coping well that’s a day to day chore. Some days are better than others, sometimes there is a trigger, Twins, a Siren, a Song and sometimes there isn’t and it’s just one of those bad days you learn to deal with.  We have four wonderful boys who keep our heads above water and show us that the future is still bright for us even though we are a member missing.

Today those bad days are not quite so consuming as they were and we have refocused our grief into fundraising and trying to create a future, a legacy for Alexander now that he cannot create his own.  The money raised in Alexander’s memory will hopefully, one day provide an answer for us and give peace of mind to millions of families especially my own.  I hate to think of my boys having the fear for their children that I have for them.

The Lullaby Trust is the future for my family and thousands of others who have been affected by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  It gives me hope that one day I may get an answer to why?

The Lullaby Trust is about so much more than that though, they are a friend, a shoulder to cry on, they offer a network of information and support and are sharing that with every family that is blessed with a new baby.  If you need to talk they can provide a listening ear, they provide peace of mind to those of us that have bravely gone on to have more children through their CONI scheme and they are constantly working with health professionals to make sure the Safe Sleep message is getting through.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the cause of death on Alexander’s death certificate but there is no obvious or known reason for his death, with help from The Lullaby Trust and through Alexander's Charity Ball we are learning to cope with this.
